The stuff one needs

Bookbinding, Technique, tools / Sunday, June 1st, 2025

I bought a guillotine a few years ago. Not the french one of course. But one I used for paper cutting. It served me for a few years until I realized I needed something even more hefty and industrial. Since I have been delving into bookbinding,( because I am a multicrafter and bookbinding was on my list of things to do,) I wanted something really heavy.

Nik the Booksmith on youtube has been a fountain of knowledge of all things bookbinding, and she was using this thing in one of her videos, the HFS(R) Heavy Duty Guillotine Paper Cutter. This thing is a beast. It weighs a lot and it is not something you would want to move around from one place to another when you are working. It just needs it’s own place. I had a spot free, which is amazing in it’s own right, and there it has been sitting now for a few years. Not in daily use, but often enough that I can defend the cost of shipping it to me.

I have made a few books now, and I am becoming better at it each time. I just love the feel of a handmade, handsown book. I have made journals, art books, water colour books, calenders and much more.
